Design Philosophy

Our Design Philosophy: Green by Design

Climate-Responsive, Not Just "Sustainable"

While many firms focus on "green gadgets" and add-on technologies, we practice a "Sustainable from the Start" approach. We prefer the term climate-responsive. By studying the specific micro-climate of your site—the sun paths, prevailing breezes, and local topography—we design structures that naturally stay cool in the Texas heat and warm in the winter.

Our goal is to reduce energy demand before a single mechanical system is even turned on. Through the use of "shading umbrellas" (broad roof overhangs), strategic window placement, and natural ventilation, we leverage the laws of physics to create comfort.

The Power of Two: Science Meets Art

Our firm’s unique strength lies in the partnership of our founding principals, Alan Barley and Peter Pfeiffer. Their combined expertise ensures that every project is balanced between aesthetic elegance and rigorous building science.

  • Alan K. Barley, AIA: As our lead designer and artist, Alan has an uncanny ability to translate a client’s lifestyle and aspirations into stimulating architectural forms. His deep roots in regional architecture ensure that every home feels like a natural extension of its surroundings.

  • Peter L. Pfeiffer, FAIA: A pioneer in the green building movement and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Peter brings a master’s level of expertise in building science. His career has been dedicated to "mainstreaming" high-performance design, ensuring our homes are as smart as they are beautiful.

The Comprehensive Design Process

We believe that 90% of a building's success is determined in the first 10% of the design process. Our Comprehensive Design approach means we are your partners from the initial site walk to the final interior flourish.

  • Site-Specific Planning: We "look for the sky," siting homes to preserve old-growth trees and maximize natural resources.
  • Balanced Daylighting: We design for soft, glare-free natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting while protecting your interiors from the harsh sun.
  • Indoor Air Quality: We prioritize your health by selecting non-toxic materials and designing for superior ventilation.
  • Timeless Longevity: We design for the next 30, 40, or 50 years. By avoiding passing "styles" and focusing on durable, high-quality construction, we create homes intended to be passed down through generations.

Living Well by Doing Well

High-performance architecture is an investment in your quality of life. Whether it’s an elegant Hill Country retreat or a sophisticated urban remodel, our mission remains the same: to provide you with a home that exceeds your expectations for comfort, health, and soul-stirring design.
