This home is located on a steeply sloping ridge top lot. Secondary spaces were tucked under the main living spaces allowing the design to sensitively step down with the land. The steep topography also influenced the linear design as it hugs along a rock outcropping. The linear layout is perfectly harmonious to the land and sun allowing the home to orient its long faces to the north and south while minimize its east and west exposures. Tall north facing window walls capture cool even lighting throughout the day while deep overhangs along the south protect from overexposure from the sun. The main roof sheds to the south to provide maximum solar collection potential for future solar system installations. Decks and Screened Porches along the south face also provide areas for mid–air outdoor entertaining and a means to capture prevailing breezes that blow up from the canyons below. Perfectly sited to maximize passive heating and cooling principles, the home goes further by employing the use of premium non-degrading exterior materials with low/no maintenance characteristics. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are coordinated to enhance conservation principles and lower overall utility consumption. The screened auto structure is detached, connected to the home by an entry deck and bridge. This separation protects the indoor air quality of the conditioned space but also provides protection for the entry from strong, ridge top winds when they shift from the north. The sympathetic relationship of this home to its site is the key to its functioning success- To be energy efficient and delightful. |
